A Vocation
by Joshua Val Martin

We're turning Josh's play into a film, and we need your help to make it happen.

We want this project to speak for the community the film represents, and as such, we are looking for an exclusively LGBT cast for the film (49 leads plus extras.)

That's a lot of people...!

So, if you or anyone you know would like to get involved as an actor, collaborator or spokesperson, please get in touch! It’s really important to us that the way we make and share this film tallies with what it’s about – we want it to be a real collaboration in every sense.

About the project...

'A Vocation (forty-nine scenarios for gay men)' is an exploration of gay male experience in the UK today.

It is comprised of forty-nine snapshots that give a glimpse into how sexuality still defines an individual. These moments range from falling in love with your best mate at school, to a mobile app telling you 'femmes' aren't welcome. The moments build to form a dramatic collage of British gay experience in all its classes, ages and races - the settings ranging from your Dad's car on the way home from church, to a wet day in Manchester beside a statue of Alan Turing.

'A Vocation' was written by Joshua Val Martin in response to the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting (where there were 49 fatalities) and to mark the 49th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality between men over the age of 21 in England and Wales last year: 'A Vocation' was inspired by these events but is not defined by them.

Turning a play into a film...

Although ‘A Vocation’ was originally written for stage, film is going to allow us to fully realise the huge scope of this text. It has the potential to make a real impact if seen by a wider audience. We are: writer Joshua Val Martin, co-directors Roxy Cook and Ben Mann, and producer Celia Dugua. We will be working with the talented team at Mann Bros Media to bring the film to life.

We will launch our crowdfunding campaign this June, where we will be sharing five of the forty-nine scenarios to give audiences a flavour of what’s to come. With the right funding in place, we will shoot the other forty four scenarios later this year, and plan to release this film by the end of 2017.
